Citizens' Academy

The La Habra Police Department is proud to offer the Citizens' Police Academy to local residents. The Citizens' Academy is not designed to prepare students to be police officers. Instead, it was developed to create a closer working relationship between the police department and those who live and/or work in the community. The course, which is offered in English and in Spanish, is conducted twice annually, over a 6-week period. Applications are currently being accepted.

Learning Police Operations

Students learn from department personnel about all aspects of police operations, including Patrol, Traffic, SWAT, K-9s, Investigations, Records, Communications, Animal Control, and a variety of other auxiliary services.

Attendees gain a better understanding of the La Habra Police Department, how it is organized and the services it provides to the community. A typical class will consist of 12 to 24 people,18 years of age or older, who have successfully completed the application and background process.

Participation

Instructors are drawn from all levels of the department. Students will meet the Chief of Police, managers, supervisors, patrol officers, detectives, dispatchers, and other department employees. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions and express their concerns about pertinent issues. A major goal of the Citizens' Police Academy is to increase understanding between community members and the Police Department, and to further enhance the strong relationship, which already exists.

Citizens' Police Academy participants will enjoy a variety of experiences, including a police facility tour, S.W.A.T. and K-9 demonstrations, crime scene investigative techniques, problem solving scenarios, and, upon graduation, an opportunity to go on a ride along with an officer.
